Eagle Academy: Fact or Fiction?
Eagle Academy Foundation was founded is 2005 to develop and support college preparatory middle and high schools for young men in urban cities. Eagle Academy is NOT a charter school. If it opens as currently planned, it will be a DISTRICT school operated by Newark Public Schools, in a way that is similar to American History High School (which also began as a co-located school).
Eagle Academy has a successful track record of providing mentorship and creating schools where young men strive for academic excellence. Eagle does not “screen” or “cream” the highest performing students from elementary schools (like magnet schools do), has exceptionally high standards and expectations for behavior and academic performance, and provides intensive mentoring to ensure success. Eagle Academy-Newark will be Eagle’s fourth school.
Science Park High School is a Newark Public “magnet” School serving grades 7-12. Awarded a Blue Ribbon of Excellence, Science Park is currently applying to be an International Baccalaureate World School. The administration at Science Park is also working on a plan to grow their middle school in the next couple of years to enroll 6th graders. A plan to co-locate Eagle Academy-Newark at Science Park High is being considered by NPS. To date, Eagle Academy Foundation has not officially been notified, nor have they been asked to formally agree to such an arrangement.
Parents of Science Park students and others have expressed concerns about the co-location of Eagle Academy with Science Park.
